Fundamentals for Everyone: Understanding form, light, & color

Prerequisites: Previous oil painting experience
Description: Don’t let the term “fundamentals” fool you…this workshop is not just for beginners! Though those new to oil painting will benefit immensely from the topics we’ll cover, I’ve carefully designed this class to address some of the most consistently challenging principles of paint-handling that often stump intermediate and even advanced artists. True masters—Sargent, Zorn, Rembrandt, Sorolla, all the rest—are masters of fundamentals! This intensive, four-day workshop is a deep dive into the most essential aspects of these underlying principles in painting (and drawing). We’ll start with brush/paint control and application, and progress through shape design, light logic, value, and edges on day one. On day two we’ll progress to color and form, and begin an exploration of the amazing harmonic potential of a limited palette while challenging ourselves to deal with color using primarily theory and imagination. We’ll try our hand at some quick studies to warm up our design and simplification muscles, and explore additional limited palettes and painting from life before moving on to a double primary palette and photo references (yes, we’ll talk about how to set yourself up for success with great references!) on day four. I hope you’ll join me to strengthen your command of these primary principles and equip yourself for simple, elegant decision-making, paint-handling, and color-comprehension as you navigate future paintings.
