Limited Palette and Color Relativity (Trailer)

Oil Painting Demo: Limited Palette and Color Relativity

A limited palette (composed of three primary colors plus white) is one of the most useful tools for deepening your relationship with your pigments, honing your color sensitivity, and most importantly, gaining an understanding of color relativity. It's so important to approach painting as an exercise in recreating the relationships between the colors, as much as (or more than!) reproducing each color in a literal sense. This video demonstration takes us through two paintings of the same subject with two different limited palettes, an experience that highlights many of these nuances. This video should leave you feeling empowered to tackle many different types of subjects with whatever three primary colors you can lay your hands on! I encourage you to paint along with the two demos in this real-time video. Reference image will be provided with download.

Pink Peony Demo (Trailer)

Oil Painting Demo: Pink Peony

This oil painting demonstration touches on some of my favorite tricks and tools of the trade for painting nature, florals, and foliage. I’ll introduce you to my pigments and walk you through my color mixing methodology (particularly for working with varied, saturated, and complex reds), give you a taste of my layering process, and talk about some of the logistical aspects of working with leaf and petal shapes (drawing, sighting, brush control).

Run time: 1hr, 7min
Price: $75

Drawing Materials Tour (Trailer)

Drawing Fundamentals 1.0: Drawing Materials Tour

A tour of my favorite tools and those I'll be using in the Drawing Fundamentals videos. Each Fundamentals video will have a corresponding supply list, but this intro serves an overview of all the materials I regularly use. Don't worry, you won't need everything for every lesson! So grab a pen and paper for some notes, and enjoy the tour.

Drawing Fundamentals 1.1: Technique, Posture, & Warmups (trailer)

Drawing Fundamentals 1.1: Technique, Posture, & Warmups

This important introductory video covers many of my personal tips and tricks for a nimble pencil, flowing movements, and comfortable body when drawing. Even if you've been drawing for years, you may find some useful new ideas within these topics! We'll talk about how to set yourself up for success when you get ready to draw, from pencil sharpening tactics, to the overhand grip I recommend, to arm position, paper position, and ways of training your eye, mind, and arm to work together in an ideal way. These practices will greatly increase your speed and accuracy over time, as well as ensure that you're physically comfortable (avoiding stiff joints and repetitive use injuries) and ready to enjoy many happy years of drawing.

Drawing Fundamentals 1.2: Ellipses & Eye Level (Trailer)

Drawing Fundamentals 1.2: Ellipses & Eye Level

Ellipses are one of the simplest and most useful tools for conveying form, tilt, and eye level in receding space. Though they have a reputation for being difficult, they are actually quite approachable! This video will help you get friendly with this common and useful shape, equipping you with an understanding of why ellipses do what they do, how to approach drawing them (including avoiding common mistakes and pitfalls), and how to combine them within an object or within a scene to convey your desired illusion and readily adapt to additions and changes.

Run time: 1hr 27min

Drawing Fundamentals 2.0: Light and Shadow: The Sphere (Trailer)

Drawing Fundamentals 2.0: Light and Shadow: The Sphere

While this little sphere might seem simple, the more I learn, the more convinced I become that the vast majority of the concepts involved in advanced atmospheric drawing are each contained, in some small way, in a drawing of a sphere. From surface texture to edge quality, focal point, the orchestration of highlights, lost edges, hierarchy, controlling your reflected light, turning your shadows…It’s really one of the most compact lessons in artistic technique, and it’s both enjoyable and rewarding to draw. This lesson and demonstration in light logic (the parts and behavior of light and shadow) and simple geometric forms is both my personal favorite and the one I consider most indispensable!

Run time: 1hr 21min
